I am a firm believer in the Michael Wilcox theory of color mixing and use his principles in my own work as well as in the various classes I teach. I found that the color selections that had evolved in my painting palette over the years corresponded very closely to Mr. Wilcox's own recommendations, while his book, Blue and Yellow Don't Make Green explained why it worked.

I have used the Wilcox method as the basis for all my color mixing lessons, including "Color Mixing Made Simple" workshops that I teach regularly at the Dunedin Fine Art Center. I also frequently refer to his books, including The Artist's Guide to Selecting Colors and Perfect Color Choices for the Artist in my painting classes. I also used this theory, including the Successful Color Mixing video, in teaching design classes at St. Petersburg College.

While I use many more colors when I work in colored pencil, I still work with an awareness of these principles. Even in my workshop for the national convention of the Colored Pencil Society of America, I was able to emphasize the use of complementary colors for more effective shading. I am always glad to remind students they can eliminate confusion as they work and save money by limiting the number of colors they work with. But more importantly, they learn they can achieve much more harmonious and realistic effects by following the mixing principles he recommends.

Simple, cost-effective, and visually effective — it's the best approach to color mixing that I've ever found!
