The most comprehensive guide to artist’s watercolor paints ever published. All leading manufacturers assessed, the pigments that they use identified and light fastness examined. No punches pulled.

Artist’s Quality paints should contain genuine ingredients that match their name. Cadmium Yellow Light, for example, should contain Pigment Yellow 35:1. Such pigments are expensive, making the paints rather costly. The alternative is to purchase and use less expensive paints, often described as ‘Student’ quality paints. The word ‘Hue’ is often added to show that the ingredients are not genuine - Cadmium Yellow Hue for example.Such paints vary in quality - they can be good value but they can also contain inferior industrial pigments, prone to fading.

Concious of the need for a less expensive range to be used with our approach to color, we have been on the lookout for pigments which cost less but were also light fast. They also had to give the strength of color required and fit in with the principles laid down in our various books. We have found what we were looking for! Within the next few weeks we will be announcing the launch of our Academy Range watercolor paints. In time these will be followed with Academy Range oil and acrylic paints.
