Miniature Eastern or Western Bluebird

The Eastern & Western bluebird differs mainly in their coloration pattern. You can choose either specie. The bluebird will be nearly half-size (about 3" inches long). We will construct a habitat presentation, with the choice of building miniature feet and legs, or mounting with the legs tucked under and just the toes showing. The carving segment of each class will focus on design, carving, sanding, stoning & burning as well as preparation for painting. The painting segment will be taught using acrylic paint & will focus on mixing & application with emphasis on the technique of building color with washes over detail work. We will use of the Paasche AB Turbo airbrush to apply the shadows, highlights & feather markings will also be taught.

Lori’s Bird Carvings

There are three categories of bird carvings, waterfowl, songbirds and hawks, each bird carved from tupelo gum. After the bird is carved & shaped to its final form, the feathers are carved & textured with a high speed micro-grinder. A wood burner with a knife-sharp tip is used to achieve the final feather texture. After each & every feather has been textured, the piece is painted with acrylic paint. Life size Flat-Bottomed Decoy Style.

"Many people don't have the opportunity to see the intricacies and subtleties of form and color that birds possess. By making these highly detailed sculptures, I'm attempting to reveal this beauty to the collector and show that even "drab" birds are incredibly beautiful when seen up close." - Lori Corbett
