Profile
Daniel Goldenberg is 49 and born in Canada. He has lived in Denmark most of his life where he paints and teaches. He has drawn since childhood and in his early 20tees he started painting and exhibiting. His style has always been realism and his latest work show scenes from Copenhagen. In recent years he has also painted scenes from nature, still-life, portraits and a series of swan paintings. He has taught art for 10 years, mostly to small groups of students or giving individual lessons in his studio. 'My work is everything to me. I paint what I find beautiful or interesting but I find it essential to try to include a subtle dimension of mystery or of something unresolved. This approach causes me to be drawn to certain motifs and not others. I don’t feel I have a story to tell, but rather I find myself deliberately removing any personal story to reach something deeper and impersonal. I’m drawn to subtle grays as well as strong colors with emphasis on lighting. I usually use reference photos, often many for each painting, so I have more information to choose from. In the city scenes I usually remove some traffic and people as I want a particular mood without too much interfering. I trust that I intuitively choose the right subjects and motifs so although my work is very controlled I actually use my gut-feeling for deciding what works rather than formal knowledge. Some of my motifs are found by coincidence and I always have my camera ready. At other times I plan and wait for specific lighting and weather conditions for my city scenes. For my still-lives I use lamps or wait for sunlight (unfortunately only available in my studio from April to September) to create the lighting I want.'
